A word from the CEO It’s time to register for the Management Challenge! Congratulations to the City of Tea Tree Gully for being the first team to register.....and let the competition begin!

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Board Members: Mark Searle, Tony Siviour, and Andrew Cameron. Mark will become President next October and both Tony and Andrew are from regional councils.
We are currently in discussions with the University of Adelaide and the Australian Centre for Excellence in Local Government aiming to accredit our Management Challenge and Emerging Leaders Programs towards an MBA pathway. I will keep you informed as to how this progresses.
I would also like to announce our Annual Conference for 2012, "Talkin' about your generation", to be held next February.
Industry-leading speakers have been locked in, and other arrangements finalised. You will find the topics entertaining, engaging and relevant. There is no better event to attend if you want to stay at the forefront of progressive Local Government thinking.
All that is left is for you to register - details are under "Upcoming Events" below...
Finally, don’t forget to nominate for the prestigious Leadership Excellence Awards. The closing date is 16 January 2012 to allow sufficient time for the judges to deliberate.
Over the Christmas period, we'll be taking some time off too - LGMA (SA) will be closed from noon on 21 December, reopening 16 January.
So, on that note, we wish all of you in “Local Government Land” a safe and happy holiday season including some well earned “re-charge” time to energise yourself for all of the challenges and opportunities that 2012 will bring.

Country Spotlight - Bobbi Atherton, District Council of Yorke Peninsula
The range of skills shown by staff in country councils continues to impress.....this month we look at Bobbi Atherton, HR Advisor, from the District Council of Yorke Peninsula.
Hi Bobbi - What is your professional background?
I have over fifteen years of experience working for the State Government. I started my career with an administration background and worked with many different authorities including TAFE, Liquor Licensing Commission, Corporate Initiatives Unit and Services SA.
My most rewarding roles have included Project Officer and Office Coordination roles within the Government Businesses Group (responsible for outsourcing various Government Assets); Office for Government Enterprises (responsible for monitoring and reporting on various statutory authorities); and the Office of the Employee Ombudsman (providing an employee advocacy role – advice, rights and resolution processes).
The last two years have been in Local Government with a role in Risk Administration/ Occupational Health and Safety and earlier this year I have moved back into industrial relations field, with a role as HR Advisor.

How did you get into your current role?
I was already working at the LGA when my current position was created. I was really enjoying the challenges of Local Government and having a background in environmental science I jumped at the opportunity to apply.

Recent Events
Executive Leaders Program (XLP) 15 – 17 Nov 2011
Congratulations to this year’s participants that attended our XLP. These local government professionals set aside three days for their development and explored leadership in a local government context while examining the role of the CEO. They had “heart to hearts” with Mayors, existing CEO’s, past CEO’s and a range of other guests.
Here are a few testimonials from participants :

Emerging Leaders Alumni Network event proudly supported by Local Super 18 Nov 2011, was held at the Griffins Hotel with guest speaker’ s Nic Szuster CEO Local Super and Lowen Partridge, Peartree Marketing. Lowen presented on: ’Knowing How to Market Yourself’. A big thank you goes to Local Super for supporting this event.

UNWRAP YOUR SUPER POWERS!
The Women’s Network Conference ‘Unwrap Your Super Powers’ was held at the Convention Centre with 100 delegates and was a huge success.
The guest speakers included winners of 2011 Excellence Awards, showcasing their projects, 2 women (Kathryn Finnigan AM and Kylie Walsh) pioneering their way through SAPOL , breakout sessions to reflect on individual and collective goals, and to end a great day Jennifer Jefferies, an inspirational speaker about work life balance and her 7 steps to sanity who had the delegates hanging off her every word and laughing hysterically. Thank you to all those who attended and participated.
Congratulations go to Bobbi Atherton (District Council of Yorke Peninsula) for winning the photo competition at the conference, a $200 Wotif.com voucher (proudly sponsored by Wotif.com) ... I think the photos speak for themselves! Well done Bobbi.

One of the most challenging career transitions in local government is moving from an operational focus to one requiring a strategic whole-of-council approach to leading and managing the full obligations of Council.
While the role of the Chief Executive Officer in South Australian local government is challenging, it is also highly rewarding for those who have the right mix of skills, experience, training and preparedness to lead in this uniquely diverse and dynamic environment. However, this can sometimes be a difficult and daunting pursuit especially for those recently appointed or new to the sector.
